The weather’s getting cooler, streets look brighter, and everyone’s a bit jollier. Radio stations are beginning to play yuletide tunes and shops are putting up their Christmas décor. Yup, it’s the “-ber” season once again, and pretty soon the malls are going to be packed with the yearly Christmas shoppers.
To avoid getting cramped in the mall together with other last-minute buyers, start your Christmas shopping early this year. It would be a lot less stressful if you could actually take the time to look around and choose what you really want to buy for your friends and family.
Start your Christmas shopping by setting aside a budget for this year’s presents. Before hunting for gifts, make a list of the persons you’ll be giving gifts to and how much you’re willing to spend for each. Start by setting the total amount that you plan to spend this year, and divide that amount among your friends and family. Stick to your budget, as it wouldn’t be fun to start the New Year broke.
Next, explore the malls, bazaars, and trade fairs. Research on what events are happening around Christmas and see if there are any concerts or movie premieres your friends or family might be interested in. The key is to think of your recipient while you decide which gifts to get. One of the most common mistakes in shopping for gifts is thinking of what you would want to get, instead of what your friend or family wants. Think of the recipient’s latest hobbies or interests or the lifestyle that he has.
If you’re not close to the recipient and are not sure of what to get, food will always be a safe yet much appreciated gift. If you’re giving gifts to a group of people (for example, all your officemates), give the same item such as a box of assorted cookies or a platter of that amazing pasta from a local restaurant.
If you’re giving gifts to kids, find out what the latest toys are. If you’re unsure, cash will also be fine, especially for the older kids who already know what they would want to buy for themselves.
Standard gifts for women are bags, clothes, jewelry, and make-up. For men, gadgets, clothes and accessories like sunglasses and watches will always be appreciated. For both, you can’t go wrong with perfume.
Remember that you don’t immediately have to buy something that interests you. You can always come back if you’re not yet sure. Of course, be aware also of the risk that it might not be there anymore when you come back. You’ll have to weigh the risk and how much you really want to get the gift.
If the food has to be ordered, remember to place your orders early and set the date for pick-up to make sure you’ll be on the top of the maker’s list.
After you’ve done your shopping activity, don’t forget to wrap your gifts! You can have this done professionally or by yourself.
